*From Disruption to Cooperation: Effective Redirection Strategies for Parents and Teachers*
*Understanding Disruptive Behaviours in Children*
Disruptive behaviours in children can present as temper tantrums, defiance, or various forms of acting out. These actions often reflect a child’s struggle to express their feelings or manage frustration.
Redirecting these behaviors is essential for parents and educators, as it teaches children how to handle their emotions and impulses in healthier ways.
*What is Redirection* ?
Redirection is a technique that involves guiding a child’s focus away from negative behaviours and towards more positive actions. This method not only interrupts disruptive behaviour but also helps children feel secure and in control, reducing the chances of further outbursts.
*Effective Redirection Techniques*
Here are some practical strategies for redirecting disruptive behaviours:
*Offer Choices* : Providing options helps children feel empowered. Instead of saying, “Don’t hit your friend,” try, “Would you prefer to hit the pillow or yell into this stuffed animal?” This allows them a constructive way to express their feelings.
*Utilize Distractions* : If a child is misbehaving, redirect their attention to something else. For instance, if they are throwing a tantrum, you could suggest a different activity or offer a toy.
*Model Appropriate Behaviour* : Children learn through observation. Demonstrating the behaviors you wish to encourage can be more effective than simply instructing them on what to avoid.
*Establish Clear Expectations* : Clearly outline the behaviours you expect. This helps children understand the limits and reduces confusion.
*Physical Redirection* : If verbal cues aren’t working, gently guide the child away from inappropriate behaviour. For example, if a child is hitting, you might take their hand and lead them to a different activity.
*Use Positive Reinforcement* : Recognizing and praising good behaviour when it happens encourages children to repeat those positive actions.
*Maintain Calmness and Firmness* : Speak in a calm tone and remain composed when addressing disruptive behaviour. This communicates your expectations without escalating the situation.
*Avoid Power Struggles* : Engaging in arguments can worsen the situation. Instead, stay calm and assertive without entering into a conflict.
*Benefits and Limitations of Redirection*
While redirection is a useful strategy, it’s important to consider both its advantages and potential drawbacks:
*Benefits* :
Helps prevent the escalation of negative behaviours.
Provides an opportunity for teaching proper behaviour.
Reduces embarrassment for the child in public settings.
*Limitations* :
May not address the root emotional issues behind the behaviour.
It can be difficult to apply consistently, especially during stressful moments.
Some children may not respond positively to redirection, necessitating alternative approaches.
*Conclusion*
Redirecting disruptive behaviours in children is a crucial skill that promotes emotional intelligence and positive conduct. By using techniques such as offering choices, distracting, and modelling appropriate actions, caregivers can assist children in learning to manage their emotions more effectively.
Remember, patience and consistency are vital in this journey!

‘Sleep challenges and solutions for children with neurodevelopmental conditions’
By : Nadia Riaz
It is essential to establish a calming evening routine that includes consistent bedtime practices, such as reading or gentle storytelling, bath with epsom salt and oil massage before going to bed. Incorporating gentle stretching exercises along with deep breathing techniques can help relax the body. Engaging in simple yoga poses and ensuring ample physical activity during the day can also promote better sleep. Additionally, limiting screen time at least an hour before bed can aid relaxation. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is crucial for regulating the child’s internal clock. If sleep issues persist, consulting a pediatrician for tailored guidance is advisable as they might suggest Melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone, which is sometimes used to regulate sleep, especially in children with neurodevelopmental conditions like autism or ADHD.
